How Dental Insurance Works
When you pay your premium every month, you gain access to discounts on dental treatments and procedures that you need. When it comes to orthodontic coverage, every insurance plan is different. If you know that you or your child needs braces, it’s important to choose a policy that offers coverage or orthodontic treatment. This way, you won’t be left paying for everything out of pocket. Many plans include partial coverage for the following services:
- Dental X-Rays
- Initial Consultation
- Orthodontic Treatment
- Orthodontic Retention (retainers, etc.)
- More!
Here are a couple of things that you should know about dental insurance:
- Dental insurance plans are renewed at the beginning of the year. Your benefits won’t carry over to the new year.
- You need to meet your deductible before coverage kicks in. Your annual maximum is the designated amount of money that your insurance provider will agree to pay in a year. If you don’t reach this amount, the remaining balance will be returned to your provider.
What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?
Medical insurance and dental insurance both concern your health, so you would think that they would be similar. However, there are several key differences. The main one is the dental insurance is focused on preventive care. That’s why most plans include complete coverage for cleanings and checkups and partial coverage for more extensive treatments, like orthodontic care.
In-Network vs. Out-of-Network
When you are choosing an orthodontist to receive care from, it is key to know if they are in-network or out-of-network. Here’s how this works.
In-Network
When an orthodontist is in-network with an insurance provider. This means that they have agreed on a contract to offer services at set fees. By choosing an in-network orthodontist, you can better maximize your benefits by paying for the lowest out-of-network cost. Here are the plans that we are in-network with:

- Assurant
- Blue Cross Blue Shield
- Connection Dental
- Cigna
- Delta Dental
- Dental Benefit Partners
- Dental Health Alliance
- Guardian

Out-of-Network
