Aligner Advice: 5 Ways to Ease Discomfort

March 20, 2025

Does Invisalign hurt? This is usually one of the first questions prospective patients ask during their consultation. If you’ve been wondering the same thing, you’ll be happy to hear that this innovative orthodontic treatment is pain-free, especially when compared to traditional braces. That said, it is normal to feel some soreness when you first get your aligners (and when transitioning to each new set in the series). Fortunately, you’ll find a quick guide on how to ease new aligner discomfort below!

1. Wear Your Aligners As Much As Possible

When soreness arises, patients are often tempted to remove their aligners. Not only does this increase the likelihood of you falling off-track with your treatment plan, but it also will prolong your symptoms. To put it simply, the more you wear your trays, the quicker your teeth will adjust.

Tip: Switch to each new set of aligners right before bed! That way, you sleep through the period of time when your teeth are moving the most.

2. Keep Orthodontic Wax With You

Since Invisalign aligners are crafted from smooth plastic and custom-made to fit the contours of your teeth perfectly, they won’t irritate the soft tissue in your mouth like traditional brackets and wires. That said, you may have an aligner or two that has a sharp edge. You can always bring it to your orthodontist so they can file it down, but it’s helpful to keep orthodontic wax with you so you don’t experience any discomfort in the meantime.

3. Sip on Cold Water

As your teeth move into their properly aligned positions, your gums can get inflamed. While this is completely normal, it can lead to a bit of discomfort. Using a cold compress or towel-wrapped ice pack can help, but those may not always be available. Fortunately, sipping on cold water can have the same effect!

4. Avoid Crunchy Foods

When your teeth feel sore, the last thing you should do is eat hard pretzels, peanut brittle, and other foods that require extensive chewing. Instead, opt for softer, more nutrient-dense foods! A few examples include plain yogurt, scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, and oatmeal.

5. Use a Desensitizing Toothpaste

Another way to combat sensitivity is by using a desensitizing toothpaste! Fortunately, these usually aren’t any more expensive, and they are just as readily available. Just make sure to choose one that’s ADA-approved.
