How Long Do Braces Need to Be Worn?

June 8, 2020

Woman with braces in Frisco

Are you thinking about getting braces to fix alignment issues in your smile? You probably already know about the dramatic effects that braces have on your teeth, but how long will you need to wear them for? That depends on a variety of different things regarding your individual situation. Continue reading to learn more about the factors that determine the timeline of braces from your orthodontist in Frisco.

What Determines the Timeline for Braces?

The Amount of Correction You Need

People who have more alignment issues and require more correction can take much longer than the average person. Although most people only need to wear braces from 18-24 months, people with hard-to-correct issues may need to continue treatment for up to three years.

How Old You Are

Children often see results faster than adults do when wearing braces.

The Type of Braces You Choose

There are different types of braces you can choose to better your alignment. Usually, this includes traditional metal braces and Invisalign Clear Aligners. If worn correctly, Invisalign can take a shorter time than regular braces, but this all depends on your individual smile.

How Can You Make the Process Go Smoothly?

  • Don’t forget about the extra steps your orthodontist may ask you to take. Skipping out on your nighttime headgear or rubber bands prevents you from staying on track. This will eventually lead to a longer treatment time.
  • Only take out aligners when you are directed to. If you aren’t wearing them enough, your treatment will take much longer because your teeth can start to move back to their original places.
  • Avoid hard and sticky foods that can damage your braces. If you cause harm to the braces, the process will take longer, and you will need to spend more time at the orthodontist to get them repaired.
  • Use a mouthguard to protect your teeth and braces if you play contact sports.
  • Brush and floss regularly. You don’t want to be experiencing oral health problems, especially when you have braces.
  • When you get your braces off, wear your retainer as your orthodontist directs you. Skipping out on this important step means that your teeth can start to move right back to where they started.

Braces have many benefits including a better ability to chew food, easier brushing and flossing, and an improved self-esteem. Taking the time to get braces in Frisco now will give you a smile that can last a lifetime if properly cared for.
